FAQ
Do I qualify for Bariatric Surgery?
Not every obese person qualifies for bariatric surgery.
A couple questions to ask are:
- Are you 100 or more pounds over your ideal body weight?
- Are you over 40 BMI or over 35 BMI with significant co-morbidiites?
If you answered yes to the questions above you may qualify for bariatric surgery. You will have to undergo a wellness and psychological evaluation before your surgery to make sure that indeed you are prepared and qualify for bariatric procedures.
How Much Weight Can I Expect to Lose?
Weight loss varies between procedures and patients however bariatric surgery has a track record of significant weight loss in the range of 50-70% of body weight over 3 years in a typical patient. If you are willing to commit to lifestyle changes including diet and exercise, you should be very pleased with your results. More importantly bariatric surgery is a conduit to a healthier life.
How much does Bariatric Surgery Cost?
The cost of bariatric surgery depends on insurance coverage (and deductibles) and procedure performed. Generally speaking, a patient paying cash for a procedure will pay between $12,500 and $31,000 depending in the procedure.
Will My Insurance Cover It?
Most insurance companies, as well as Medicare and do cover bariatric surgery, however every plan differs. We will help you verify that your benefits include bariatric surgery and we will help you determine what if any co-pays and deductibles you will be responsible for.
Will my surgery be laparoscopic?
Over 90% of the surgeries we perform are laparoscopic. There are cases however that we start laparoscopically and once we have entered the abdomen we have to convert to an open procedure. While this is rather uncommon, it is possible. We will however, with a high degree of accuracy, be able to let you know which procedure is best for you before you go into the OR.
