Obesity and Bariatric Surgery

Generally speaking, a patient is considered morbidly obese when they are 100lbs or more over their ideal body weight or if their Body Mass Index is 40 or more. While this indicates that they may be candidates for bariatric surgery, there are many other physical and psychological criteria to evaluate. Patients with a BMI of 35-39.9 may also qualify if they suffer from one or more diseases associated with obesity (also called co-morbidities). Bariatric surgery however, is not simply a weight loss tool. Indeed, weight loss is secondary to the most important goal of a healthier life. Obesity is a major cause of type-2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and sleep apnea – all life threatening diseases in many cases. Bariatric surgery aims to improve or resolve those diseases and give the patient a new and healthier life.
